Our History
The Henry County graduate chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated was a vision of the late Emmadean Commander. Her telephone calls and visits to the prospective members were numerous and encouraging..The chartering ceremony was held at the Holiday Inn in Collinsville,Virginia. The presiding officer of the Mid-Atlantic region in 1974 was Dr. Barbara K. Phillips of Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Dr. Phillips became a national president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.. shortly after the chartering service The Martinsville chapter was so honored to have her conduct the ceremony.
The late Claudia Caldwell’s home served as a central meeting place for the members from Beta Chi Omega of Roanoke, Virginia to assemble with the newly formed group. Since the chartering service in 1974, many groups of college women, the first in 1976, have become members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.. through the graduate membership process. Other members have made the transition from college membership to the local graduate chapter.
Because of the immense foresight of these founders, seventeen Alpha Kappa Alpha women were able to establish the Kappa Delta Omega Chapter in Martinsville on May 25, 1974.
